I hope this finds you enjoying a great end to 2020 and filled with hopeful anticipation for 2021! We’ve had a challenging year, but God has seen us through. As my last newsletter, I’ve labored over what to write. How can I express all that is in my heart! My mind is flooded with images of your faces, the conversations shared, the prayers offered, and the lives impacted.

What I know is that my heart is full.

  • Full of love for each of you.
  • Full of respect for your fortitude in the face of all the challenges we’ve experienced over my time serving.
  • Full of awe for your selflessness.
  • Full of wonder for how you care for aging parents, or manage single motherhood, or juggle multiple children’s schedules, or support your husband, or work a full-time or part-time job doing one or more those things.
  • Full of gratitude for how you’ve loved me, served alongside of me, encouraged me, and supported my vision for the Women’s Ministry.

Through tears I say, “Thank you!” In October, I shared about Discerning the Voice of God; in November, I wrote about Obeying the Voice of God; and in December, I encourage Resting in the Voice of God. Allow Him to sing over you.
“The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17

Once we’ve discerned God’s Voice and choose to obey it, then as we walk in fulfillment of His plan for our lives, we can rest knowing that He rejoices over us with singing.

It truly has been my joy, privilege, and honor to serve you. May you continue to be women who follow closely, listen intently, and obey the Lord fully.

Serving with Love,
Elizabeth

“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.”

I love this translation of 1 Samuel 15:22. The prophet Samuel was in the middle of a rebuke of King Saul. Earlier in the chapter, Samuel had given very clear instructions on what the Lord required of King Saul, but he did not obey.

Samuel asked, “Why did you not obey the Lord?” Saul replied, “But I did obey the Lord.” (1 Samuel 15:19-20)

Saul obeyed some of what God said and then set out to justify his actions. Some might argue that his partial obedience is better than complete disobedience, but in God’s eyes partial obedience is disobedience.

I’ve also heard it said that delayed obedience is the same as disobedience.

Ouch! I know that I have been guilty of both of those scenarios. What about you?

Today, my heart is to encourage you to be fully and immediately obedient to the voice of God. Last month I shared about discerning the voice of God. If you missed that message, I encourage you to check it out here as I was privileged to have it published by Josh McDowell Ministry as a guest blog post. (https://www.josh.org/hearing-gods-voice-like-waves/)

Once we discern that God is speaking, we have the opportunity to choose obedience.
What I find so helpful is that God doesn’t require us to take 100 steps of obedience, just the next one! And then He calls us to trust Him as He illuminates the next step of obedience.

“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalms 119:105

And thus, my need to share with you God’s next illuminated step for me. I have submitted my intent to step out of my role as Women’s Minister of Cottonwood Creek Church and return to what I like to call Marketplace Ministry. I’ve been hired by Southwestern Consulting as a Sales and Leadership Coach. This affords me the opportunity to continue ministering through serving business owners, those in sales, and those desiring professional growth. I will also continue assisting my husband in his photography and videography business.

Please know that we will continue attending Cottonwood Creek and I’ll be here to cheer the new Women’s Minister on she takes up the mantle of serving the Women of Cottonwood! Please join me in praying for who God intends to fill that role. For now, you can expect to see me as usual through the end of 2020.

I’ll write more in December as I reflect on the great honor and privilege it has been to serve you. Thank you in advance for praying for me as I obey the voice of God in my life and trust Him in my next steps.

I love hearing the sound of waves on the shoreline of a beach. Whether the wind brings them crashing in, or calmer weather causes them to gently lap the sand, there is a consistency, a repetition to waves that fascinates me. I find myself listening for their rhythm and discernible pattern.

“Crash!” The waves impact the shore and are drawn back out to sea. “Crash!” The white foam of the waves crests, then diminishes as the sand absorbs the blow.

To me, the sound of waves is a ministry to my mind. I deal with tinnitus, which is a loud ringing in my ears. At its worst, tinnitus can bring on a panic attack. But it’s best managed when I am able to focus my brain on something other than the annoying ringing. Listening to waves helps me do that. Truly, their sound is a ministry to my soul and mind.

I think discerning God’s voice works this way for me, as well. Read on.

Discerning God’s Voice Like Waves

I was recently asked by a friend how I discern God’s voice. I shared that it’s like a wave; that a thought hits the shore of my mind. I’m aware of it, but it ebbs away as I move about my day. But sometimes the thought revisits the shore of my mind. It could be a scripture, or a person’s name, an idea, a situation, or a sin that I need to address. As the thought ebbs and revisits, I become aware of its consistent repetition. Sometimes the thought crashes; other times it’s a gentle, persistent lapping.

Praying, looking to God’s Word, listening for the Holy Spirit, and seeking wise counsel are part of discerning God’s voice. But when a thought keeps nudging me, experience has taught me that it’s often God trying to get my attention about something He wants me to do, either for myself or another person. Oh, I wish I could tell you that I always acknowledge and act on what I hear, but I don’t. Only God knows the blessings I have missed out on by ignoring His voice.

You might be asking, “How do you know that it’s God’s voice and not your own thoughts?”

First, by considering the thought. I compare it to what I know about God’s character, and whether it is contrary or in direct defiance to the truth of who God is and what He expects of His people. I then go to the Bible. And I pray. I ask God to confirm what I believe I hear Him telling me.

Would God ever tell me to get even? No! (Romans 12:19) Would God tell me to sin? No! (Matthew 5:48) If my thinking doesn’t align with God’s Word, I can be sure I need to reject it. We know who originates that kind of thinking, right? Satan. And we know what God tells us to do with the thoughts he suggests: reject them!

As God’s Word teaches us in Galatians 5:16, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” If our thoughts are not of God, we are called to confess any sin around our thoughts and walk in the forgiveness that Jesus Christ has secured for us.

We may never fully understand the mystery of God’s voice in our life, but we can listen for evidence of it. Today, consider your own persistent thoughts.

Is God trying to get your attention so that you take action? How is God prompting you to look to His Word for guidance, to pray, or to rely on the empowerment of His Spirit before you make a decision?

Be encouraged that God is speaking to you, in waves both crashing and lapping. He desires that all of His children hear His voice. But we have to listen, pay attention, and be willing to take action.

Sunsets are one of my favorite things. I love the vast array of hues that a sunset paints onto the sky. I’m always amazed at how quickly the sun goes from what seems like a huge ball of fiery oranges and reds, to a small dot quickly escaping over the horizon.  Sometimes our window for decision making can feel like that as well. There is a decision that needs to be made and it feels like a huge blinding ball of what ifs, what thens, and other questions of uncertainty. Yet, just as quickly as the sun goes down, our time to decide can also feel like it is quickly escaping our grasp, our view, or our opportunity to “get it right.”

Who can relate to the desire to get it “right”? That has been on my mind since I last wrote. You see decisions are before each of us and there comes a time where we need to decide to decide the direction we will take. I know many of you have had compressed time frames to decide things like whether your children will school in person or virtually, whether to take the vacation or put it off, attend that group in person or remain on Zoom. Whatever decisions we are facing, there comes a time when we must decide to decide, trusting that God is able to direct our steps. Here are two scriptures that I rely on when I know it is time to decide.

“Trust in the Lord with your whole heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

“Whether you turn to the left or to the right, you will hear a word behind you saying, ‘This is the way. Walk in it.'” Isaiah 30:21.

Just like each of you, I’ve had to make ministry decisions. My heart is to get it right. I seek opinions, look at all the information, pray, pray, & pray some more. Then I know it is time to decide to decide, because otherwise like the setting sun that is huge one moment, and disappearing over the horizon the next moment, I can become stuck in no action. And no action means that opportunities could slip away, finances could be impacted, and the vision for living could be diminished. So trusting that God is leading the way and that He is able to work all things together for our good because we love Him and are called according to His purposes, here are some important decisions to share with you as we move into the fall.

  • Our youngest will reside on campus for his freshman year at University or North Texas.
  • I’m moving forward with the Cottonwood Creek Women’s Conference, September 19th. More details are located at cottonwoodcreek.org/2020.
  • I decided to streamline by efforts in the entrepreneurial realm by bringing my DVTD® Marketplace (formerly Premier Designs Jewelry) under my Author|Speaker|Cultivator brand. You can follow me on Facebook @elizabethbmahusay and Instagram @ebmahusay.

Today, let’s decide to decide! Drop a comment on important decisions you have made.

Heat Can Refine or Ruin https://elizabethmahusay.com/heat-can-refine-or-ruin/ Fri, 31 Jul 2020 12:27:16 +0000 https://elizabethmahusay.com/?p=6880 The post Heat Can Refine or Ruin appeared first on ELizabeth Mahusay.

I grabbed the shot above from our front steps one afternoon when it had reached 100 degrees feeling like 104. It was a couple of weeks ago. We have entered what is typically our hottest season here in Texas. Likely for you as well regardless of where you are while reading it. Many resort to pool time, staying in the air conditioning, while others are sunbathing to develop that golden tan. The question I want us pondering today is how do we respond to the “heat” of God’s work in our lives?

You see in life heat can refine and it can ruin. It is all in how it is applied. In the kitchen if I neglect to watch the amount of heat on the dish I am cooking, the heat can ruin it because it burns to the bottom of the pan. But in gas production, heat is a critical component of refining oil so that we have the fuel we need to drive our vehicles.

Heat can refine or ruin.

How is God applying “heat” in your life today? Are you yielding to His refining fire so that as Job declared, “But he knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold,” or are you hanging on to that which He desires you to release so it doesn’t ruin you? You see just like that dish on the stove needs just the right heat to cook and not burn, God know just the right amount of heat to apply to your life to refine you not ruin you.

In these uncertain times, let us be careful to consider our hearts and our response to God’s refining heat. Let’s be women who trust Him enough to submit to His refinement; to be strong and courageous because the Lord our God is with us wherever we go and in whatever we face; and let us rejoice that the refiners fire has produced a more excellent reflection of Christ in our lives.

Elizabeth

2020 is almost half over and in many ways it feels like we’ve experienced a years worth of life in these last few months. How did you spend the weeks of shelter in place? How did God show Himself faithful to you during your extended time at home? What hopeful anticipation do you have for the months ahead? These are all questions I’d love to ask you if we could sit down over coffee or tea at my favorite hangout, Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea, located off Custer and Stacy Road.

Here is an overview of how I would answer each one. As far as ministry, my time was spent looking for creative ways to encourage you online. How did God show Himself faithful? Well, going live everyday for weeks and developing a podcast style interview allowed me to get to know more of the Cottonwood women! As a church we have improved our online offerings, and we have hopeful anticipation for how God will use these new online offerings to share the hope of the Gospel well beyond our local community!

As far as our family is concerned. I spent a great deal of time in March brainstorming with my husband to keep his photography business going and then working like crazy to implement those ideas. We lost 90% of our business in a matter of two weeks. But God showed up big time in providing for our needs. I have so many God stories of how He worked through friends, provided just what was needed to pay that next bill, and honored our efforts to work hard while trusting Him with the results. It has strengthened my hopeful anticipation for what God has in store for us. Some of the ideas we’ve implemented provided new opportunities that wouldn’t have been explored if not for the pandemic shutdown.

Did I like the shutdown? No!
Am I grateful? Yes!
What about you?

If you would, are willing, share your answers to these by emailing me at elizabeth@elizabethmahusay.com. Let’s celebrate the goodness of our God as we head into summer.

Moms are difference makers. It has been our tradition at Cottonwood to honor you on Mother’s day during the service, and then give you a gift as you exit. Since we are meeting online right now, we wanted a way to honor all moms through giving a special gift to a community ministry. Be sure to watch the preservice video this weekend to see and hear how the Cottonwood family is making a difference in our community in honor of moms!

Speaking of mothers, I am sure if we could sit across from each other over coffee or tea, there would be plenty of conversation over memories of our mother’s raising us into the women we are today. In the good, the bad, and let’s face it – the sometimes ugly, our moms did the best they could to equip us for life. With each passing year of our boys growing and maturing, I have a whole new appreciation for my own moms. Both the mother who birthed me and my step-mom who has loved me as her very own child, each have made a huge impact on my life.

This Mother’s Day, let’s lift praises to the Lord as we acknowledge our moms. If you’re a mother we celebrate you. If you desire to be a mom and you are waiting for the fulfillment of that desire, we pray alongside you for God’s perfect plan in your life.

Until we can be together again, I’m praying for God’s protection over you, His encouragement of you, and His light to shine brightly through you.

I have spent the last year pondering mirrors and what they mean in our lives. How they impact us, influence us, and often instigate poor thinking in our minds.

As women we likely see our reflection hundreds of times a day. The messages we allow to develop our self-image can radically impact what we see in our reflection. I was honored to share a five-minute message on this topic for the Chapel Sessions that Bridgette Hammers and Creek Worship are producing! I invite you to take the time to click the link and watch.

https://www.facebook.com/cottonwoodfamily/videos/521556815420263/

I also want to encourage you to join in the Transform My Thinking, God Bible study that will air on cottonwoodcreek.tv Mondays at 8pm starting April 20th! The videos stand-alone but if you want to complete the Bible study, you can purchase a book on Amazon by clicking the title above. I’ll be on live chat during the lessons to engage you!

Be sure to check out the rest of the newsletter to find out what is happening for the Women of Cottonwood.

So much has happened since I last wrote to you. I was rereading the opening letter from last month and feeling the hopeful expectation of God moving as we prepared for our 2020 Vision Women’s Conference. And then COVID-19 began surfacing in the news. Here we are multiple days into a quarantine and there is still so much uncertainty swirling around us.

And thus my title, “In Time Like These.” You see, God keeps bringing this hymn to my mind throughout the day. It has so much truth for our present-day circumstances. I’ve provided the lyrics below. Please take the time to read them.

In times like these you need a Savior
In times like these you need an anchor
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

Chorus

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One
This Rock is Jesus, the only One
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

In times like these you need the Bible
In times like these, O be not idle
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

Chorus

In times like these I have a Savior
In times like these I have an anchor
I’m very sure, I’m very sure
My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

How do we go from being uncertain to certain? By realizing that we have a Savior. By getting into our Bible to be reminded that His promises are sure. By proclaiming that our anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock of Jesus! He is the One!

This is the message of hope that each of us need in times like these. When we are “very sure” we project the certainty of Jesus to the world who is very uncertain today of what their future holds much less who holds their future! Let’s be women committed to being “very sure” that our anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

Vision for Right Thinking

Welcome to 2020! A year sure to be filled with metaphors relating to vision.
     See your future with clarity.
Focus your attention on achieving your goals.
Check your spiritual eye sight.

Vision is one of the primary senses God gifts us with so we can interact with the world. When our vision is poor we look for ways to correct the cause. I’ve worn glasses for a long time so I know the value of corrective lenses. I wear my glasses to read better, drive safely, see people and objects with greater detail. The vision FROM my glasses makes a difference in my life.

I want us to apply this concept of corrective vision to our spiritual lives. God’s Word provides needed correction in our lives because God’s Word corrects our thinking. Romans 12:1-2 helps us. “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice for this is your reasonable act of worship. Do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to prove what is the good, perfect, and acceptable will of God.”

Just like I go to the Optometrist and ask for an eye exam to know the correction my vision needs, I need to present my body to God and ask Him to show me the correction my thinking needs. Just like I have a choice to use my vision prescription to obtain the needed glasses, I have a choice to get into God’s Word for the renewal my mind needs. Once I have my glasses the doctor does not make me wear them. In the same way, God does not “make us” renew our mind and prove His will for our life. No, in both cases we have a choice.

My prayer for the women who read this in 2020 is…

  • we choose to have our spiritual vision checked by asking God to identify areas of our thinking that need correction..
  • we choose to take steps to correct any poor spiritual vision by addressing wrong thinking, and establishing biblical ways of thinking.
  • we choose to daily walk by faith and not by sight, because we are committed to cultivating vision that comes FROM right thinking.

Serving with Love,

Elizabeth
